East Hancock Elementary Food Drive
November 2014
East Hancock Elementary, located in Kiln, recently held its 15th annual food drive to benefit the Hancock County Food Pantry. Students are learning social responsibilities, community awareness and compassion for their neighbors. Children learned that approximately 45% of the funds the Hancock County Food Pantry spent to purchase food in 2013 come from the local community – individuals, churches, civic groups and businesses. They also learned that the Food Pantry’s one and only mission for the last 28 years has always been to provide food and personal hygiene products for Hancock County families who have an immediate “crisis or emergency” need for assistance. And, the pantry is an all-volunteer organization – there is no paid staff. Over 100 volunteers staff the food distribution warehouse and intake offices.
Through a friendly school competition students brought in 1,878 actual items or close to 2,000 pounds of food and personal care items. This year students were more aware than ever that people need other items than just food. Rolls of paper products, soap, and detergent were among the many donated items. Through a chart posted in the hallway, students could see the contributions growing each day. The chart provided an excellent real life math lesson for the students.
Mrs. Tonya Perniciaro’s kindergarten class and Mrs. Amity Giipson’s class brought in the most items and their classes are featured in the photos.

First Annual Business Cookout for Charity Raises $2700 for Hancock County Food Pantry
October 2014
Local businesses, political leaders and volunteers alike on October 1st participated in the first annual Hancock County Business Cookout for Charity at McLeod Park. The event raised more than $2700 which was donated to the Hancock County Food Pantry. Last month Food Pantry leaders said they were running short on food and other supplies after a busy summer. The Food Pantry located at 9972 Hwy 603 just north of Longfellow Avenue is the only full time food pantry in the county. The Hancock County Food Pantry has been serving about 150 families a week and food has been running low. District 46 State Sen. Philip Moran said that when the news got out that the Hancock County Food Pantry needed help, dozens stepped up to the plate. "This event was made possible thanks to a lot of people," Moran said. "Everyone seemed like they wanted to help." The event included more than a dozen food booths, games for kids and community fellowship. Officials said they hope to make the event a yearly tradition.
